History, ancient art and surveying
I taught History of Architecture and Ancient Art, and Architectural Surveying. Two complementary fields: understanding works within their own time, and learning to observe, measure and represent them rigorously.
About me
For more than thirty years, I have worked where architectural history, representation and digital technologies meet.
I am Full Professor at Università Politecnica delle Marche, Rector’s Delegate for the Enhancement of Artistic and Architectural Heritage, Head of the University Museum System and Scientific Director of mAIndh_Lab — Mindful Artificial Intelligence for Innovation and Digital Heritage.
My research spans 3D surveying, photogrammetry, LiDAR, HBIM, digital twins, extended reality, virtual museums and artificial intelligence. But technology is never my starting point: it follows the sources, the questions and the responsibility of interpretation.
Two research interests run through my entire academic life: Vitruvius and the Basilica of Fano, beginning with my doctorate and reaching decisive archaeological confirmation in 2026; and Antoni Gaudí, studied since my 1991 thesis and now the subject of new monographic research.
This website gives ideas more room than social media can offer: a personal yet documented space connecting scientific research, teaching and the public life of places and communities.
The mission of my work is heritage for everyone: democratising knowledge, making heritage accessible for people to experience, turning it into a shared resource and shared beauty. Digitisation opened this path; today, artificial intelligence can bring people even closer to history. In Vitruvio Italia, this vision becomes community, participation and discussion.
My teaching journey
These are not two separate chapters. Historical knowledge and surveying remain the critical foundation from which I teach digital technologies and AI.
I taught History of Architecture and Ancient Art, and Architectural Surveying. Two complementary fields: understanding works within their own time, and learning to observe, measure and represent them rigorously.
I teach Architectural Surveying, Digital Documentation and Artificial Intelligence for Historical, Artistic and Archaeological Heritage, connecting sources, 3D acquisition, models, immersive environments and new intelligent systems.
Tools change, but the teaching principle remains the same: first read and understand heritage, then choose technologies capable of documenting, interpreting and making it accessible.
Current responsibilities
A selection of roles that best describe my academic, scientific and cultural work today.
Full Professor at DICEA and Rector’s Delegate for the Enhancement of Artistic and Architectural Heritage.
Scientific Director of the laboratory dedicated to artificial intelligence for innovation and digital heritage.
Head of the University Museum System and the Museum of Science and Knowledge.
Member of the Scientific Board of the National PhD Programme in Heritage Science and of the UNIVPM Doctoral School.
Scientific lead for national and European projects for museums, archaeological sites, cultural institutions and businesses.
Lead for Technological Innovation and Universities on the Board of Ancona, Italian Capital of Culture 2028.
A journey through time
My thesis on Antoni Gaudí and the continuation of the Sagrada Família opens a line of research that remains active today.
My doctoral research on Vitruvius’ Basilica in Fano moves from archaeological remains to reconstruction hypotheses and the first three-dimensional computer model.
University research and teaching bring together architectural history, surveying and the earliest digital approaches to heritage.
Founding and scientific direction of the International Centre for Vitruvian Studies in Fano.
The proposed location of the Basilica in Piazza Andrea Costa guides a new phase of investigation.
Archaeological evidence for the Basilica meets more than thirty years of research; mAIndh_Lab places AI at the heart of heritage documentation and communication.
